       • Beacon - 138 East Cordova: 8:00am – 11:30pm

       • Crosswalk - 136 East Cordova: 9:30pm – 2:00am

Harbour Light operates three year-round shelter facilities that provide 136 emergency shelter beds nightly. We also operate winter shelters from approximately November to March. The mission of our Emergency Shelters program is to provide overnight emergency shelter in a loving, respectful and dignified manner.

It is our goal to provide a safe place of refuge and to be a point of contact and referral to Harbour Light or other community services that will meet our guests needs and improve their quality of life. We offer support, trust and hope.

We are grateful for the support of BC Housing for our shelter program.

The Beacon & Haven 24-Hour Shelters

The Beacon and Haven shelters offer 24-hour service to 60 and 40 men, respectively. Guests staying at these shelters are encouraged to work with our case workers and outreach teams to address their housing obstacles. Staff can assist guests in seeking employment, mental and physical health care, housing, social assistance, and other resources that will help them move to long-term housing.

Guests
in the Beacon and Haven are served nutritious meals, have access to personal hygiene supplies and laundry services, the Vancouver Coastal Health nursing team, and a diverse slate of job skills, education, and living skills programming.

The Crosswalk Shelter

This shelter offers a low barrier, safe, alcohol- and drug-free overnight shelter for 35 men and women. The Crosswalk is open from 9:30pm to 7:30am nightly. Guests have access to showers and are provided with a snack upon intake and discharge. Many services are available for referral such as healthcare, lifeskills, outreach and access to caseworkers.

The Crosswalk is now located at 136 East Cordova, where it is more fully integrated into Harbour Light's continuum of care to better serve our guests.

Winter Shelter Services

Since 2004, the Anchor shelter has provided comfort to clients during the cold, wet winter months. Offering 40 mats for men and women, the Anchor is a safe, warm, dry space to spend the night. This shelter offers a low barrier, safe, alcohol and drug free environment. The Anchor is open from 8pm - 8am daily. Much like the year-round Crosswalk shelter, guests at the Anchor have access to showers, snacks upon intake and discharge, and referrals to supports including healthcare, lifeskills, treatment programs, outreach and caseworkers. This shelter is often a place of last resort for clients seeking refuge from the cold or wet weather.

Harbour Light operates a second winter season shelter, as an annex to the Beacon. The winter shelter offers an additional 30 beds for men with 24-hour services, case worker support, and programming resources to support guests in achieving their personal goals.

Harbour Light is part of the Extreme Weather Response shelter network, activated in times of freezing temperatures, snow, high wind, or other weather that may present a risk to health and safety. Our EWR typically offers 40 mats for men and women, with snacks and basic services. In 2016, in response to a particularly cold winter, our EWR shelter operated nightly from December through March at an average of 117% capacity. We are grateful to offer these services to our community as part of BC Housing and the City of Vancouver's winter shelter response.

hl art 035You can help!

Our shelters welcome donations from the community. Our most needed items year-round are new underwear, new socks, toiletries, work gear and clothing, books, and board games. In the fall and winter, toques, gloves, mittens, and "hot hands"-type hand warmers are in high demand. These types of donations can be dropped off at the shelters directly during intake hours, or you can contact us for other options.

Care packages, seasonal/festive decorations, and other donations are often welcome - please get in touch to share your idea with staff so we can ensure the best outcome for your generosity!
